The advertising breaks on the NPO radio stations raised more than 43 million euros last year. That is more than three million euros more than in 2022, the STER reports in its annual report. Advertising revenues on public television channels actually declined. In total, STER’s advertisements on radio, TV and online raised more than 201 million euros. The money goes to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

The total amount is 26.1 million euros more than the ministry had budgeted. Despite this result, there are concerns. Frank Volmer, director of STER, wants the public broadcaster to have more online advertising space. Former minister Slob previously limited this.

“We see that linear viewing and listening time is decreasing and, due to Slob’s measures, we cannot compensate for this with the growth of online media use,” says Volmer in explanation of the 2023 annual figures. “If this does not change, it is expected that last year will be the last year that Ster can pay an amount above 200 million euros and turnover will eventually drop to 150 million euros.”

If Slob’s measure is reversed, Ster expects to eventually achieve a turnover of 250 million euros.
