Wout van Aert underwent surgery today after his fall in Dwars door Vlaanderen. The procedure was successful, reports Visma | Lease a Bike in a press release. It is still unclear when the Belgian will be able to cycle again and whether he will recover in time for the Giro d’Italia.

Van Aert was involved in a major crash 67 kilometers from the finish of Dwars door Vlaanderen. He had to leave the match and was later found to have broken his collarbone, sternum and seven ribs. He can therefore forget about participating in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, his major goals this spring. He will also not contest the Amstel Gold Race, Visma | reported Lease a Bike before.

After the spring, Van Aert would focus on the Giro d’Italia, but the Italian stage race is also in danger. “His participation in the Giro d’Italia is still uncertain,” his team writes. “We will make the decision in the coming weeks based on his recovery. On behalf of Wout we would like to thank everyone for their support. He now hopes to be able to continue his recovery in peace.”
