This year, Lee Towers will sing to the participants of the Rotterdam marathon at the starting line for the last time. Towers traditionally sings his most famous hit on April 14 You’ll Never Walk Alone.

After his last performance, Towers “sang to the marathon runners about thirty times”, the organization reported on Tuesday.

The singer says in a press statement that it is “fantastic every edition” to be able to sing to the participants, but that “all good things must come to an end”. “I am extremely proud that I have been able to experience so many editions and that I can end it in this positive way,” says the 78-year-old Towers.

Director Wilbert Lek of NN Marathon Rotterdam emphasizes this You’ll Never Walk Alone is “forever linked” to the marathon. “We would like to thank Lee for his many years of dedication and look forward to enjoying his performance at the start one more time.” The singer will be seen at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam.

The song was written for the musical in 1945 Carousel. When main character Carrie loses her loved one, her best friend Nettie tells her to hold on: You’ll Never Walk Alone. The song was originally written for a female singing voice.
