Feyenoord is not happy with the deal that the Municipality of Rotterdam and Feijenoord Stadium have concluded together. As the only tenant, the club has not been involved in discussions. General manager of Feyenoord, Dennis te Kloese, has reported that the last word has not yet been said on this deal. Chris Woerts can certainly understand Te Kloese’s reaction.

As a former commercial director of Feyenoord, Woerts knows the business. “The municipality of Rotterdam has developed such an aversion to Feyenoord because of the cancellation of Feyenoord City. You must understand well. It was the most sensible decision by Feyenoord, because no club in the Netherlands can finance a stadium worth five hundred million, that is simply not possible,” Woerts explains in the Sportclash podcast.

Woerts gets the idea that stadium plans are not high on the agenda in the port city. “A few years ago, 328 million euros was made available for the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which is not even in the top ten of most visited museums in the Netherlands. It is also the case that Hugo de Jonge is spending two billion on the renovation of a few stones in the government building that are of no use to anyone. We all think that is normal, but we all think a nice stadium in Rotterdam is too much,” says the Dutch businessman.

Woerts has harsh words for Lilian de Leeuw and the way she is acting. “The municipality of Rotterdam shows itself to be a sore loser. In combination with Feijenoord Stadium, they are bad losers. No Feyenoord City, no new stadium and large debts. Now they have sold De Kuip in exchange for housing, which is destroying Feyenoord’s revenue model. All under the direction of De Leeuw, the director of De Kuip. She concluded a deal without informing her colleagues in the Feyenoord management. Together with the Supervisory Board of Stadion Feijenoord behind the club’s back, a shame,” Woerts concludes.
