Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip has a bitter feeling about the 2-2 draw in the Eredivisie match with Excelsior. Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn was sent off the field in the first half, but according to the coach, that was too severe a punishment.

“You know in advance that you have to win this match,” Van ‘t Schip said in front of the camera on Wednesday ESPN. “We are really disappointed. You don’t play well in the first phase, but you get a 1-0 lead. I think that penalty is a turning point.”

After 36 minutes, the Rotterdam team came alongside via a penalty kick. Excelsior striker Mimeirhel Benita was on his way to the goal after a nice pass from Derensili Sanches Fernandes, but was stopped by the defending Bergwijn. Referee Sander van der Eijk then pointed to the penalty spot.

“According to the rules it would be a penalty, but it is doubly difficult,” Van ‘t Schip continued. “There was contact, but I really didn’t expect red. I thought offside or yellow.”

Despite the disappointing evening in the ArenA, the team from Amsterdam managed to score a point at the last minute. “I have to compliment the boys that we still came alongside after the break. We are really disappointed. You know in advance that you have to win and today was really not enough. It was not enough.”

Due to the draw against Excelsior, Ajax still claims fifth place in the Eredivisie, which means direct qualification for the Conference League. The Amsterdam team may have to give up that place again on Sunday to NEC, which will take on AZ.
