On the talk show On 1 a seat at the talk show table is reserved for Geert Wilders. He would not like to come more often, Sven Kockelmann said in the talk show last night. It has therefore been decided to keep the chair available in the coming weeks until it arrives.
The action of the talk show caused reactions on social media. While some agree with Geert Wilders, others understand Kockelmann’s dissatisfaction On 1.
Invitation to Geert Wilders
“We live in a constitutional state and it is quite common there that political parties that are represented in parliament, especially if you are the largest group there, also provide text and explanations in traditional media,” Kockelmann explains.
The politician and other members of the PVV faction would also have been invited this week. “But the answer is usually: no,” says the presenter. “I know that Geert Wilders often watches this broadcast. Look, there’s an empty chair. We will leave that chair unoccupied until you come sometime.” They still have a few weeks to go, he continued. “You are very welcome to provide text and explanations for the choices you make in the House of Representatives.”
International Day of Press Freedom
Wilders’ absence is complemented by International Press Freedom Day, which took place yesterday. “We must remember that we have freedom of the press in the Netherlands,” said political reporter Thomas van Groningen On 1. “It is said that press freedom is often compromised, including by a forming party, the PVV.”
This resulted in Kockelmann’s invitation for Wilders to take a seat at the talk show table.
Public broadcast Corporation
Wilders has said several times that he would prefer to abolish public broadcasting and regularly criticizes the media, but despite this, the talk show would still want him to provide “text and explanation about his choices” because of the “usual practice for political parties”.
