Rock and accordion music at café Thijssen

At Café Thijssen on the Brouwersgracht, the queue at the toilets competes with the crowds in front of the stage. The heavy rock mixes with the über-Jordanian accordion music from the nearby café ‘t Papeneiland, where the folk singer repeatedly urges people to raise their hands in the air. He concludes with a heartfelt ‘enjoy life, everyone’.

Cartoons with sex education can be seen around the city

If you stroll through Amsterdam today or tomorrow, there is a good chance that you will come across a cartoon from Vanillacooldance showing King Willem-Alexander and Koningin Máxima are depicted, who are having a conversation about safe sex.

Artist and initiator Jessica Stahl will also hand out a thousand illustrated condoms throughout the city on King’s Day. She does this in response to the recent RIVM report showing that the number of gonorrhea infections among young people has almost doubled in the past two years. With the campaign she wants to promote safe sex.

Return point for empty bottles and cans at the intersection of Vijzelstraat and Prinsengracht

Empty bottles or cans? You can find them at the ‘Holle Dolle Donnie’ at the intersection of Vijzelstraat and Prinsengracht. This 10-meter-high deposit return point with the image of rapper Donnie should ensure that cans and bottles are kept out of the canal.

With the initiative, Statiegeld Nederland – the foundation responsible for the deposit system – wants to make participants aware of the importance of returning packaging in a playful way. The proceeds go to a foundation for the homeless.

DJ Martin Garrix will again give a fireworks show on the Zuidas

DJ Martin Garrix will also give a fireworks show this King’s Day from the roof terrace of his home on the Amsterdam Zuidas. He has received ignition permission for the show from the provincial North Sea Canal Area Environmental Agency. For this permit, it is checked whether the show meets all safety requirements.

The fireworks may be set off between 9:00 PM and 11:30 PM from the roof of the apartment complex on Gustav Mahlerlaan. The total ignition time will take about ten minutes.

Not all local residents are happy with the fireworks show. “This is a residential/work area, not an event location,” says one of them AT5 know. “It’s nice that he’s throwing a party, but the neighborhood is experiencing a lot of inconvenience. Noise and mess.”

Garrix, the stage name of Martijn Garritsen, born in Amstelveen, also gave a similar fireworks show on King’s Day in previous years.

This is what the show looked like last year:

The weather during King’s Day

The most important thing first: what will the weather be like on King’s Day? It does not seem to remain completely dry: in the afternoon there is a local chance of a heavy shower with hail, thunder and a lot of rain in a short time.

Friday evening – King’s Night There are some showers in the south, while elsewhere it is often dry. After midnight, showers are still possible, especially in the western provinces. It eventually cools down to 4 to 7 degrees, considerably less cold than previous years. “Last year we even had to deal with extensive night frost during King’s Night,” reports Weeronline.

During King’s Day there are dry periods with sometimes sunshine, but from the south the chance of showers increases. In the course of the afternoon there will be scattered showers across the country and local showers may turn out to be heavy, the weather bureau predicts. The temperature is about 14 degrees in the Kop van Noord-Holland to 16 degrees in the rest of the country.
