Every now and then there is a (small) revolution and little more than evolution follows. That evolution usually feels like ‘more of the same plus a little or plus a gimmick’ (even though quite a lot happens underwater.)

At a certain point a product is fully developed and small improvements are made, but nothing groundbreaking. Until there is something groundbreaking, of course, but that is only once every few generations of the particular product.

Look at the hardware of mobile phones:

The processors are fast, the cameras are good, the sound is good enough, the screens are good, etc. Mobile phones in their current form are fully developed in terms of hardware. Of course the processors will become faster (so that the software can do more), and ‘even better’ cameras will probably be introduced. Sound is often neglected, but that is everywhere, the screens are also getting a little better, but that is not equally relevant for everyone. In terms of software, there still seems to be ‘some’ development, but that seems mainly based on adding features that you may or may not be waiting for.

The buzzword AI is of course very hip at the moment. It remains to be seen whether this will really be something groundbreaking for phones or whether it will go beyond a kind of OpenAI portal, but without having to open an app. (Nothing wrong with that function itself, of course, but you may wonder why you would want to put it directly in the operating system.) But it is possible that meaningful or fun things will actually be done with it. I don’t think there is much to say about that at the moment.
