Although the revelation of Make up your mindwinner Miss Showbee left mouths open, and his acceptance speech in the final of the program evoked the most emotions. Jury chairman Miss Envy Peru also became visibly emotional. ‘We are not harming anyone, this is simply our art.’

In the finale episode of Make up your mind no fewer than six queens were featured. The panel, consisting of Nikkie de Jager, Ilse DeLange, Fred van Leer and Soy Kroon, saw, among other things, how musical stars Thomas Cammaert and Stanley Burleson and pollster Gijs Rademaker revealed themselves. In the end it turned out that Miss Showbee was the best drag queen, and thus this season Make up your mind has won.

But who was hiding behind the glittering bee suit with enormous antennae? It turned out that both teams had not quite figured it out yet, because Nikkie de Jager and Fred van Leer both opted for an extra hint, after which they only guessed at the very last minute who the drag queen could be. For a long time, Fred thought that Maarten Heijmans was standing on stage in front of him, but he switched to Jurre Geluk just before the unveiling. That was a handy move, because the BNNVara presenter turned out to be indeed hidden behind the layer of makeup.

‘Scared bastard’

Although Jurre Geluk’s revelation left the panel open, it was his acceptance speech that stirred the most emotions in the studio. In it he called for more protection for people from the LGBTI community. “I’m doing this for one evening now, but I think I’m a scaredy-cat in real life. I don’t dare walk hand in hand on the street with my boyfriend. And these ladies do this all the time in their real lives,” said Geluk, referring to the drag queens on the program’s jury.

“I think we are still missing that second step. We accept it, we tolerate it and make a nice TV program about it, but in the outside world we lack that protection,” Geluk continues, while he also has to swallow hard. “We need to protect people who are different from our community, so let’s go beyond this program.”

Jury chairman Miss Envy Peru responded emotionally. “He just came in, Jurre. I was also attacked, purely as myself,” Peru said, referring to the street abuse he suffered last July. “It’s so bad that a lot of people don’t want to leave each other alone, don’t accept each other or are so mean to each other. We are not harming anyone, this is just our art. And there’s nothing wrong with that.”
