“We don’t know why people didn’t come,” a committee spokesperson said. “We rely on the rain.” According to her, some other commemorations in the country also attracted fewer people than usual due to the bad weather.

No boycott

The spokesperson does not know whether the security measures on Dam Square, such as frisking (see video below) in advance and the time slots used, may have deterred visitors from coming.

The committee also has no signals of a possible boycott because people with a reservation have deliberately stayed away.

In any case, it cannot be the case that someone has reserved ‘entire parties’ of places, because the reservation system is closely monitored and secured, she says. “You can never rule out that someone has made a few reservations, but on such a large scale that is actually not possible.”

Register in advance

For safety reasons, people who wanted to attend the commemoration on Dam Square had to register in advance this year. A maximum of two reservations could be made per person.

Last night, the National Committee for May 4 and 5 announced that tickets had always been sold until the last minute. Places that became available due to cancellations were immediately re-reserved each time.
