VideoJoost Klein used to be bullied at school, but now he is, at least for a while, one of the most popular Dutch people. The Eurovision Song Contest participant offered encouragement to children who are currently being bullied at the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest on Sunday: “It will be okay!”

It’s a strange idea. Someone who used to be bullied at school sparked a hype in the Netherlands. In four days, Joost Klein (26) will kick off Europapa his Eurovision Song Contest. He presented the act that he performed on stage in Malmö with a childish look, hoping that it would especially appeal to today’s youngsters.

Next Thursday, during the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest, there will also be children sitting in front of the television who are now experiencing for themselves what it is like to be bullied. On Sunday, during the opening parade on the turquoise carpet, Joost Klein took the time to address them directly. “You can handle it, that’s why it’s on your plate,” he said to these children. He added some advice: “Don’t fight back too hard. Let it go.” cornybut it’s true: it will be fine.”

The native Frisian realizes that he himself is now an example for many children in the Netherlands. “I am very grateful that I can make a difference. We made this song for the children. You know, once upon a time I was just a YouTuber making some stupid videos. Then we ended up making something beautiful out of it.”

As is known, Klein has his closest friends around him in Malmö. Actor Martijn van Eijzeren (Stuntkabouter) and Appie Mussa are on stage with him, Gover Meit is his creative director. “Gover asked me this week: did you expect this? From foster family to foster family in your youth and now in a hotel in Malmö to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest? Then I thought about that for a moment. No, I really never expected that.”
