After “the passage of time and surprising circumstances”, Crown Princess Amalia plans to collect her expense allowance of 1.5 million euros from January 2025. She informed this in a letter on Tuesday to outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD), who responded that he had “understanding and appreciation” for her choice. Until she has finished her studies, Amalia will continue to pay back the income component of her constitutional benefit (a total of 1.8 million euros), worth 322,000 euros.

Amalia decided in 2021 that she would refund her annual expense allowance “as long as I do not incur high costs in my position as Princess of Orange.” She felt uncomfortable with her generous income, especially because she said she paid little in return. The princess now predicts that she will need the money if she wants to continue to fulfill her position “independently and independently”. She mentions “a secretariat and reservations for living and working accommodation” as examples of cost items.

Next year, Amalia is expected to complete her three-year (English) study in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics at the University of Amsterdam, which she started two years ago. Due to serious threats, she did not live in Amsterdam during her studies, as she had wanted. She lived at home longer and then went to Madrid for more than a year. She now lives in Amsterdam and sometimes fulfills duties as heir to the throne, for example by attending state visits.
