After a particularly fast final, Jonathan Milan managed to sprint to victory in the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia, but the fast men were almost surprised by a late exit from Filippo Ganna. However, the Italian turned out to be just not strong enough to complete it.

The sprinters had the fourth stage of the Tour of Italy, with the finish in Andora, circled in red in the route book. However, the devil was in his tail, because with four kilometers to go the riders still had to conquer the Capo Mele (1.6 km at 4.3%).

This turned out to be the signal for Ganna to shoot forward and fully open the throttle. The Italian pacer immediately opened up a nice gap and also started the descent with a lead. “An impressive attack? It wasn’t that impressive, otherwise I would have won. So I am disappointed,” Ganna said after the finish Rai.

“The attack wasn’t planned, it just happened that way. But in the end the sprinters had the final say. If I had jumped away a little closer to the top, who knows… Then I might have made it,” said Ganna, who was caught again in the last kilometer and only crossed the line in 97th place.
