When taking away her waste bag, a resident of Koudekerk aan den Rijn found an aquarium with live tropical fish near the waste container last weekend.

“It’s bizarre that people want to get rid of their aquarium and just put it down,” says the woman at Omroep West.

She hesitated for a moment about what to do. “The heating was broken, otherwise I would have taken the aquarium inside myself. But a broken aquarium is not of much use,” she says.

Finally, the woman and her daughter scooped the fish out of the tank and put them in a bucket. She made an appeal on the neighborhood Facebook group to save the fish. Successfully. The fish are now swimming around in a (heated) tropical aquarium, a little further away in Koudekerk.

“All the fish survived, although it was noticeable that the fish were not in good condition,” says the owner of that aquarium. She finds it sad that people treat animal lives so lightly. “Whether it’s a fish, dog, horse or human, in my opinion all life matters.”
