The ANWB expects the roads will be busy during rush hour on Wednesday. Many people go out because of the long weekend. You can do this in the coming days to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams.
Last year, there were 1,016 kilometers of traffic jams during the last evening rush hour before Ascension Day. According to the ANWB, it will not be that busy this year, because many people are already celebrating the May holidays. However, it will be busier than normal on Wednesday because many people hit the road for a short holiday.
The most traffic is expected on the roads from Utrecht to the south (the A2 and A27) and towards the Veluwe (the A1, A12 and A50). Furthermore, the ANWB expects crowds around Arnhem and Nijmegen and on the roads in North Brabant. Most traffic jams are expected to be cleared around 7:30 PM.
Crowds are also expected on Ascension Day and the day after. Many day trippers are on the road then. The ANWB expects that this will be noticeable on roads leading to recreational areas, around amusement parks and around outlet centers, such as those in Roermond.
“It gets busy on the road earlier today than normal in the afternoon. So if you want to avoid the crowds, you should actually go now or after rush hour,” Bianca Damink of the ANWB told NU.nl. She also recommends avoiding roads where crowds are expected where possible.
According to Damink, it is also advisable to check the traffic information before departure, because there will also be road works in the coming days. And if you want to spend the entire Ascension weekend quietly, avoid the busy places mentioned above.
