German police arrested a 74-year-old man on Wednesday for the attack on Franziska Giffey, the former mayor of Berlin. The SPD politician was attacked from behind in a library on Tuesday.

The suspect is known to the police, who are still investigating his motive. Officers have already found evidence of hate crimes against state security. According to the police, the man may have psychological problems.

Giffey is currently a councilor and deputy mayor of Berlin. She suffered minor injuries in the attack when she was hit on the back of the head with a bag “with hard contents”. She had to be treated in hospital for her injuries.

The politician responded to the attack on Wednesday. She said she is doing well. She did indicate that she was shocked by the political culture in which people attack politicians with different views. She called for more respect for other opinions.

More German politicians have been attacked in recent days. On Tuesday, another politician was attacked in Dresden while putting up posters. And on Friday, MEP Matthias Ecke of the SPD was injured in an attack by four men. That attack also took place in Dresden.
