A 21-year-old former customer service employee from Amsterdam is suspected of involvement in the fraud of more than twenty elderly people. He allegedly used his former employer’s customer base for this. The scammers posed as agents or employees of a telecom company.

The police suspect that the suspect has shared personal information from the customer database with others. In collaboration with them, he allegedly defrauded the elderly or robbed them in their homes. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the personal information would also have been used to gain the trust of the victims in order to enter their home.

The Amsterdammer was arrested on April 22. The matter was only made public on Wednesday. Police confiscated phones during his arrest. It contained photos with personal data of very elderly customers of the company. The police also found a group conversation which, according to the Public Prosecution Service, shows that the participants “are guilty of criminal offences”.

The suspect was no longer working in customer service at the time of his arrest. But according to a Public Prosecution Service spokesperson, he still requested data. According to the Public Prosecution Service, this is the first time that a customer service employee in Amsterdam has probably deliberately used personal data from a customer database.

The police are still investigating the case. The Amsterdam resident’s pre-trial detention was extended by ninety days on Tuesday.
