Bayer Leverkusen qualified for the final of the Europa League on Thursday. The Germans miraculously fought to a 2-2 draw against AS Roma, which was enough after last week’s victory. Atalanta awaits in the final battle.
Leverkusen and basic player Jeremie Frimpong faced a 0-2 deficit in the 82nd minute in the home match against AS Roma. Both goals were scored from the spot by Leandro Paredes.
This not only meant that the final place for the Germans was at risk after the 0-2 win in the first leg, but the team of coach Xabi Alonso also seemed to suffer its first defeat of the season. Leverkusen recently became national champions for the first time and is also in the German cup final.
But for the umpteenth time this year, Leverkusen managed to complete a comeback. After a bold action by Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar, Gianluca Mancini awkwardly received the ball from a corner: 1-2. And deep into injury time, Josip Stanisic scored the 2-2.
Atalanta wins big against Olympique Marseille
So Leverkusen’s dream season continues and the Germans qualified for the final of the Europa League. Atalanta waits there. The team of basic players Teun Koopmeiners and Marten de Roon won 3-0 against Olympique Marseille, after the first match had ended 1-1.
Ademola Lookman, Matteo Ruggeri and El Bilal Touré scored the goals for Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. The Italians thus reached a European final for the first time in club history. This does not apply to Bayer Leverkusen, which lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in 2002.
The Europa League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22. The match is in Dublin.
