Mystery surrounding King’s Day in Berkel and Rodenrijs: at least 918 visitors sick | Domestic

--

At least 918 people have developed stomach and intestinal complaints after celebrating King’s Day in Berkel and Rodenrijs in South Holland. They got diarrhea and vomited. The number of sick people is decreasing, but the cause is unknown.

The municipality of Lansingerland and the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond announce that no one has become seriously ill.

It is not yet clear what caused the visitors to become ill. Some people had the norovirus among their members, a very contagious virus that mainly spreads through contaminated food. People who contract the virus get diarrhea and vomit, just like visitors. But it is not yet certain that this was also the cause for the others.

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority had previously started an investigation into the infections. At that time there were nine reports of people with health problems.
