Depression and disappointment dominate at Mercedes dealer Wensink on Bornholmstraat. This weekend, the wheels including the rims from under the cars were removed from ten brand new cars and taken away.

“It is very sad, very unfortunate, there are actually no words for it,” says Mark Dalemans of Wensink. A passer-by found the row of cars without wheels on Sunday morning and called the police and news site Sikkom. When the employees arrived they saw the cars standing on stones, without the wheels. “They also removed a piece of street work from us and that is what they are on, so also damage to the sills,” says Dalemans.

The damage to the cars will be very expensive “A new set of wheels can easily cost several thousand euros if you were to order one. This, I think, goes on the black market for half. So there are always people who are interested in that.”

Because the operation looks so slick, Dalemans does not believe that it is the work of a passing loner: “My assumption is that it went quickly. Then it must almost be a gang that does this more often. But that’s my feeling.” Whether Dalemans’ feeling is correct remains to be seen. The police are investigating the theft.
