Ajax informed its supporters on Wednesday that season ticket prices will increase by five percent with effect from next season. This is partly due to the increased inflation. Season ticket holders of the current number five in the Eredivisie have until Friday, May 31 to get their own place in the Johan Cruijff ArenA again.
Ajax was committed to taking revenge this season for the disappointing performances of the past year. The team from Amsterdam were ingloriously knocked out of the tournament in both the Champions League and Europa League, they lost to PSV on penalties in the cup final and had to settle for third place in the Eredivisie. However, this season things quickly went from bad to worse. Technical director Sven Mislintat was dismissed on September 24, head coach Maurice Steijn left a month later and after the 5-2 defeat against PSV on October 29, the record champions found themselves back in eighteenth place.

After the departure of Steijn and the appointment of John van ‘t Schip, Ajax found its way up, but the season is nevertheless in danger of burning out like a candle. The supporters are longing for the end of the season and the start of the possible turnaround in the next year. However, some of them must have been shocked when they opened the email on Wednesday morning. “Season ticket holders will receive a personal message on Wednesday, March 27 about renewing their season ticket(s). In this email, Ajax thanks its supporters for their support. Support that they are happy to respond to with the performance that the club must expect”writes Ajax Life.
But that obviously did not work out this season, as is also stated in the email from Ajax. “We are therefore working hard on a future in which Ajax rises again. A future in which we believe and which we look forward to facing with you and all your fellow season ticket holders”, that’s what it sounds like. Season ticket holders can renew from Wednesday March 27 and have two months to ‘re-secure their own place’. Time that some of the season ticket holders will undoubtedly need to consider whether there will be an extension at all. “It is good to know that prices are increasing by five percent. This is partly due to the increased inflation”, knows Ajax Life.
And that goes down the wrong way with a number of supporters. “Just look at what kind of season Ajax supporters endure. And let’s not forget that the ticket price was already outrageous. The supporters may suffer even more for the increased costs and missing European football”someone writes on “It is logical that prices rise, since we also get a spectacular gala show every other week.”
Ajax currently occupies fifth place in the Eredivisie and that seems to be the highest possible with eight competition matches to go. The gap to AZ is eight points. The Amsterdam team still has to do everything they can to hold on to fifth place. The lead over NEC is only two points. Van ‘t Schip and associates resume the competition on Sunday afternoon with a visit to PEC Zwolle.
