FOOTBALL – Last Friday, after an assist and a goal against Jong Ajax, he left the field as man of the match. It earned him a starting place in the derby against FC Groningen, but after 64 minutes he was substituted. After two missed chances and a 0-3 deficit, he was relieved by Piotr Parzyszek.

“This was a shit game and Friday’s was a little better,” said the tall attacker. “How is this possible? I knew this question would come and I knew I couldn’t answer it. We give away a corner very easily at 0-1 and then there is a switchover moment that could also be avoided and the score is 0- 2. From that moment on we were behind the times. We still had some chances, but we had a lot of difficulty creating opportunities.”

Yet the attacker himself could or actually should have made the game exciting twice. “I should have assessed that header better and I didn’t really make any progress with that second chance, but I could have made that one too.”

“The intention was to surprise FC Groningen with our line-up and way of playing,” says Pouwels about the 4-5-1 formation. But that tactic didn’t work, partly because we conceded the goals very quickly. We have trained this kind of game before, but not with the players who were on the field today.
