Arantxa Rus was eliminated in the first round in Charleston on Monday by the American Katie Volynets. The match lasted no less than 3 hours and 43 minutes, making it the longest WTA match of the year so far.

Rus, number 54 in the world rankings, started the match poorly and lost her serve twice in the first set. The 33-year-old Dutch woman also fell behind by a break in the second company, but leveled the score again. Rus used her second set point in the tiebreak.

In the deciding set, Russian served for the win against the 22-year-old American. Rus failed to complete the job, after which another tiebreak followed. The South Holland player got two match points at 6-4, but she did not use them. Volynets (WTA-110) then took her chance: 6-2, 6-7 (6) and 7-6 (6).

The marathon match will provisionally go down as the longest match of 2024. The second longest match was only a minute shorter. In February, Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia beat Poland’s Magda Linette in Abu Dhabi in 3 hours and 42 minutes.
