It was almost certain a few weeks ago that Ajax Women would not become national champions this year. But now that leader FC Twente has lost a championship match for the second time in a row, there is suddenly a glimmer of hope for the Amsterdam team.
Ajax Women did good business tonight by beating PSV 2-1. The victory came late: after an early opening goal from Nadine Noordam, PSV’s Joëlle Smits equalized in the second half. Because Sherida Spitse scored from a penalty in the 84th minute, Ajax still won.
The end of the match was watched attentively on the field in Sittard by the players of Twente, who had lost 2-0 to Fortuna Sittard moments earlier. The result puts Ajax back in the race for the national title. The difference between the two clubs is now two points. Both clubs have one more match to play.
A week and a half ago, FC Twente still had a street-length lead. With seven points more than Ajax, the team could have already become champions on April 21, but the championship celebration was canceled due to a draw against FC Utrecht.
Exciting ending
As a result, the decision will be made on the very last matchday of the competition. Next Saturday FC Twente will play against Telstar, a match that must be won to keep everything in their own hands.
If that does not happen, the Tukkers will have to hope for Ajax to lose points. The women will play against ADO Den Haag on the last matchday. Ajax must win that match to have a chance of winning the championship.
The scenario that Twente also loses to Telstar is not an obvious one. The team from Velsen-Zuid is second to last and has lost the last five matches.
Cup final
Ajax can also win the cup this season. The final against Fortuna Sittard is scheduled for May 20. That match will be played in the King Willem II Stadium in Tilburg.
