Follow-up

Unfortunately, millions of people get sick from a viral infection every year and many die from serious viral infections. It is important that people are aware of this and know that the transmission of viruses can be largely reduced. That is the goal of the ‘Viruskenner’ project: to create more awareness about viral diseases and how we can combat the transmission of these viruses. Many viruses cannot yet be cured, but scientists and doctors are researching viruses to create new vaccines and antiviral drugs. Prevention is and remains the best strategy, using knowledge as an antivirus.

The students of Vwo 2 of the Technasium of the CSG Prins Maurits spent 10 weeks studying different types of viruses, in countries where these viruses are common and they thought about how people can prevent themselves from becoming infected with the virus.

The kick-off was given in Rotterdam by several virologists from Erasmus MC, with more than 10 Technasium schools from the Netherlands present.

The students then worked in different groups to delve deeper into the virus, where they could choose from different viruses. They investigated what the virus entails, what the symptoms of the virus are and how you can prevent infection. The school finals were organized at the beginning of March, after which the two best groups were allowed to participate in the international finals in Rotterdam on April 23.

That day consisted of presenting (in English) a solution as a prevention method for the target group that the students could choose themselves. They also had to show what they had worked on and what they had learned.

In addition to the presentations, a creative drawing workshop was organized and to put this to good use you were allowed to develop your prevention method on a large poster. The CSG Prins Maurits team won this competition.

In addition, a knowledge quiz was held with all kinds of questions about viruses and prevention methods, in which all students and teachers were allowed to participate. Two students from CSG Prins Maurits finished in the top 3, namely Levi Boot (1e) and Kyra Klepper (3e).

On this day, the students learned a lot about different solutions to combat viruses, they followed a creative drawing workshop and met schools from Suriname and Italy. It was a beautiful and educational day.
