Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino could hardly believe how his team lost to Arsenal (5-0) on Tuesday evening. According to the coach, his team gave up after the home team’s third goal.

At halftime, Chelsea’s 1-0 deficit at the Emirates Stadium (Leandro Trossard goal) was still manageable, but things went fast after the break. Within eighteen minutes, Ben White and Kai Havertz (both scored two goals) made it 5-0 in Arsenal’s favor.

Pochettino was annoyed by the attitude of his team. “Everyone saw that we did not participate from the start of the match,” the coach said afterwards BBC. “The team was so weak and not aggressive. That’s why I’m so disappointed.”

“During half time I tried to spice things up, to start differently. But after the third goal, my team gave up. A lack of resilience was the problem.”

The defeat is the second setback in a row for Chelsea. On Saturday, the team lost to Manchester City (1-0) in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Chelsea are ninth in the Premier League and still have to do everything they can to qualify for European football.

Arsenal still believes in the national title

There were smiling faces at Arsenal after the big win over Chelsea. The London team won for the second time in four days and did well in the title battle. “That was a very good performance,” Arteta countered TNT Sports.

“This is good for our self-confidence, to believe that we can win the (championship, ed.). The players are very busy, the determination is there. My role is to continue to demand a lot from the boys.”

Arsenal are top of the Premier League with 77 points from 34 games, ahead of Liverpool (74 points) and Manchester City (73 points). Liverpool played one game less and City two. On Sunday, Arsenal awaits the charged city derby against rival Tottenham Hotspur.
