The American Department of Justice is paying victims of gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar compensation of almost 130 million euros. The total compensation is therefore almost 1 billion euros.

Nassar is a former team doctor for the American Gymnastics Association. He was sentenced to 175 years in prison in early 2018 for sexually abusing hundreds of mostly young gymnasts.

Hundreds of gymnasts and their parents had filed a complaint against Nassar. Among them were Olympic champions such as Alexandra Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Simone Biles. The former gymnastics doctor was able to continue for so long because the FBI did not take immediate action despite complaints.

“Allegations should have been taken seriously from the beginning,” Acting Attorney General Benjamin Mizer said in a statement released by the Justice Department on Tuesday.

“The compensation will never cover or undo the misery Nassar has caused. But we hope that his victims will now receive the support needed to continue their recovery.”

Previously, the victims of the State University of Michigan already received around 467 million euros. The American Gymnastics Union has compensated the victims for the equivalent of 355 million euros.
