Tornike Tsjakadoea is not allowed to participate in the European Judo Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. The Dutchman with Georgian roots turned out to be too heavy at the weigh-in on Wednesday for the tournament, which starts on Thursday.

Tsjakadoea competes in the class up to 60 kilograms. When weighed it turned out that he was heavier than the permitted weight. It is not known how much he weighed at the check-up. It is rare that a judoka cannot participate in a tournament due to a weigh-in.

“We don’t know where it went wrong,” a spokesperson for the judo association told NU.nl. “Normally, judokas always pass the weigh-in. We are going to investigate this, because this should not happen again.”

The 27-year-old Tsjakadoea has never reached the European Championship podium. He failed in the second round at the previous European Championships in Montpellier in November. Last month he won a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The Dutchman was close to a medal at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 2016 European junior champion lost the bronze medal match to Kazakh Yeldos Smetov.

Tsjakadoea is on course for a ticket for the Games in Paris. He could have won points for the Olympic rankings at the European Championships. The Games are scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
