Ajax is in talks with Graham Potter, report ESPN and VI Wednesday. The English coach must succeed John van ‘t Schip in Amsterdam, who will leave after this season.

Potter has been in the interest of Ajax for some time. The talks were at an advanced stage, but were abruptly interrupted by the suspension of Ajax chairman Alex Kroes. The director is accused of insider trading in shares.

The talks have now resumed. The arrival of the 48-year-old Englishman seems linked to the outcome of the Kroes case. Ajax will have a scheduled members meeting on Thursday, in which chairman Michael van Praag of the supervisory board will explain why he wants to dismiss Kroes.

Potter himself was a decent left-back, having played most seasons of his career in the English Championship. He started his coaching career in 2008 at Leeds Carnegie and subsequently worked at Swansea City and Swedish Östersunds FK.

Potter then made a name for himself at Brighton & Hove Albion FC, which he led to ninth place in the Premier League. This earned him a move to top club Chelsea, where he was fired a year ago after seven disappointing months.

Ajax has ended up in a deep crisis this season. Not only are there administrative issues in every possible way, but the sporting performance is also dismal. The Amsterdam team hope to finish fifth in the Eredivisie. Coach Van ‘t Schip has already announced that he will do something different after this season.
