A shockingly bad SC Heerenveen and a very good PSV on Thursday evening in the Abe Lenstra stadium. The result? SC Heerenveen’s biggest home defeat in club history: 0-8.

PSV is waiting for the moment when the championship can be officially celebrated. This may already be the case late on Thursday evening, when Feyenoord loses points in the away match against Go Ahead Eagles.

So much for the festivities that will undoubtedly erupt in North Brabant in the coming hours, or otherwise days or weeks. Because PSV’s party was matched by a sporty, pitch-black evening for SC Heerenveen. One that will go down in the history books. After all, the 0-8 defeat is the biggest in club history.

Downright painful, for everything and everyone at Heerenveen. Okay, PSV played well. Excellent even. But conversely, Heerenveen didn’t do anything at all. Defensive bumbling, poor goalkeeping by Mickey van der Hart and, above all, a soulless collective ensured that Heerenveen was 0-3 behind in no time. Malik Tillman (two) and Guus Til were accurate for PSV.

Disconcerting Heerenveen

It seemed as if Heerenveen had two, perhaps three fewer players on the field than PSV. What Kees van Wonderen’s team showed was disastrous, disconcerting and sad. The people of Eindhoven could do whatever they wanted in the Abe Lenstra stadium, where the match started ten minutes later due to heavy traffic.

Before half time it was already 0-5, thanks to goals from Til and Joey Veerman again. The latter returned to the stadium where he played for more than two seasons. Veerman has now become a decisive player in PSV’s championship team.

Substitutions at half-time briefly created some enthusiasm for the paralyzed Heerenveen. Ion Nicolaescu, Espen van Ee and Syb van Ottele came on for Pelle van Amersfoort, Simon Olsson and Pawel Bochniewicz respectively. Patrik Walemark even thought about making it 1-5, but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Fireworks

Not long afterwards it was a hit on the other side of the field. A truly brilliant goal by Johan Bakayoko, who hit the ball hard behind Van der Hart via the underside of the crossbar. PSV already celebrated the championship party for the away section, after which Luuk de Jong and Patrick van Aanholt completed the eight: 0-8. The match was stopped just before the end, after a group of PSV ‘supporters’ set off massive fireworks in the away section.

Shameful. Three games to go in the Premier League. An away match against Almere City FC, a home match against the already relegated Vitesse and then the final match in Rotterdam against Sparta. The play-offs for European football? Mathematically it is still possible. But no one believes in it, let alone wants to think about it after this unprecedented beating.
