Matthijs de Ligt would like to return to Ajax in the future. The defender of Bayern Munich and the Dutch national team believes that his time in Amsterdam went very quickly, perhaps a little too quickly, and looks back on it with warm feelings.

“I played in the first team for three years, so relatively short. I always thought that I would play at Ajax a little longer, but the situation was slightly different,” De Ligt referred to his transfer to Juventus via Ajax’s official channels on Friday. “If I ever get the chance to return to Ajax, I would really like to. But of course you never know. But if I were to say it now, I would think it would be really nice. But then I will take the entire group from 2019 with me,” he winks.

De Ligt left Ajax in mid-2019 after a season in which the club reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, won the national title and the TOTO KNVB Cup. Juventus paid 85.5 million euros for the defender at the time, including commissions for the now deceased agent Mino Raiola. In the summer of 2022, he made a transfer to Bayern Munich for an amount of 67 million euros.

“I am very happy with the steps I have taken. I won the title in Italy and Germany. For a 24-year-old, things are going quite well, I think.” De Ligt still cherishes warm memories of Ajax. “I played at Ajax for about ten years in total. Of course, I miss all the people I met there and all the players I played with.”

De Ligt still follows Ajax. This season the club is experiencing the biggest administrative and sporting crisis in its existence. “It is not the best phase in the club’s history and that is difficult to see.” The defender played a total of 117 official matches for Ajax, the same number as for Juventus. Bayern has played 69 games in all competitions.
