Davy Klaassen is confident that Ajax will get back on track. The former Ajax player said this in conversation with Football International. In addition, the Internazionale player has watched with sorrow during the current season as the team from Amsterdam went through a historically bad season.
“That is very sad and hurts,” begins the midfielder, who still follows his favorite club closely. ‘Of course I had a full schedule here at Inter, but when I had the chance I tried to watch all the matches. Well, you hope for a win every match, but it is a difficult season. I also have regular contact with some boys, such as Steven Berghuis and Remko Pasveer.’
Klaassen is convinced that Ajax will soon find its way back up. ‘Things will always be fine with Ajax, it has always been that way and it will always be that way. But as an Ajax player you want something like this to happen as quickly as possible and that is difficult to estimate. Also for me, now that I am more of an outsider and no longer walk around there every day. But I am convinced that everything can turn around quickly.’
The 31-year-old Klaassen then gives a reason for the possible reconstruction of Ajax. ‘I also have a better feeling about the people who are there now. In my opinion, it will be crucial in the coming transfer summer that the right balance is found in the selection again. If you look at Ajax’s successes, they always came about because there was a good mix between players, in terms of characters, ages, qualities, you name it. If that is correct, then the good feeling will automatically return to everyone. The real feeling of: This is my Ajax.’
Does Internazionale have the option for one extra year?
Whether Klaassen will wear the Internazionale shirt again next season remains to be seen. ‘That will become clear in the coming period. At the time I signed a one-year contract with Inter, with an option from the club for another year. If the club takes up the option, I will also be an Inter player next season. We will soon have discussions with each other and this will become clear. Everything was focused on the national title first, then the rest would follow. Logical too, so I’ll wait and see. In football it is difficult to say how things can turn out, I noticed that again last year in the summer.’
“But it is clear that I am enjoying it here very much,” Klaassen continues. ‘My fiancée likes life in Milan, we are getting married in June, and I like it very much. A relaxed way of life, and we enjoy getting to know another culture. We quickly got used to it here, and of course it also helped that we had many Dutch people around us. Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries at the club, but also Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, and the boys from Atalanta are not far away. We meet up regularly and that also helps us to quickly feel at home here.’
