Paris Saint-Germain has become national champion for the twelfth time in club history. The Parisians can no longer be overtaken by number two AS Monaco, which lost 3-2 at Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.

PSG has a twelve-point lead over Monaco with three rounds to go. The Monegasques had to beat Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday to have a chance at the national title.

Monaco started well in Lyon and took the lead in the first minute through Wissam Ben Yedder. The home team then reversed the deficit in the space of five minutes. Alexandre Lacazette equalized in the 22nd minute and Saïd Benrahma gave Lyon the lead.

After an hour of play, Ben Yedder made it 2-2 with a header, meaning Monaco needed one more goal to postpone PSG’s party. Ten minutes before the end, Ben Yedder found the goal again, but the goal was disallowed for offside after VAR intervention. On the other hand, Malick Fofana scored moments later.

PSG became national champions for the third time in a row. In addition to the last three seasons, the people from the capital also won the national title in 1986, 1994, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. With twelve titles they are the record holder.

Paris Saint-Germain failed to secure the national title itself on Saturday. Coach Luis Enrique’s team drew 3-3 at home against Le Havre in a spectacle.
