John van den Brom returns as head coach of Vitesse. The former player of the Arnhem club will succeed Edward Sturing after this season and sign a one-year contract.

If Vitesse loses the professional license, the collaboration will not continue. The club will be relegated from the Premier League due to a points penalty (-18), but that does not mean the damage is over.

Van den Brom (57) already indicated last week that he had an offer from Vitesse. After discussions with interim director Edwin Reijntjes, both parties have now agreed.

‘Start of new Vitesse’

According to Reijntjes, Van den Brom’s appointment shows that “there is still confidence in the future”. “John is the start of the new Vitesse,” said Reijntjes Omroep Gelderland.

Van den Brom would like to get back to work and makes an exception for Vitesse. “John really wants to do this for the club. We don’t have to make a cent, so it is not very lucrative for him. We are very happy with it, because he is of course a real Vitesse resident. That is why it is great that we send this signal can now deliver,” says Reijntjes.

The two-time international played twelve seasons at the club from the capital of Gelderland, spread over two periods. Van den Brom played European football several times with Vitesse and returned as a trainer in 2011.

The Arnhem team qualified for European football under Van den Brom through play-offs, but the coach had to leave Merab Zjordania, then owner of Vitesse.

Van den Brom subsequently coached Anderlecht, AZ, FC Utrecht, Genk, Al-Taawoun and Lech Poznan. He was fired in Poland last winter.
