The Association of Securities Owners (VEB) does not believe Ajax’s solution to appoint Alex Kroes as titular technical director is the right one. They believe that the role is too important to be given a titular role.

The previously suspended Alex Kroes was welcomed back by Ajax last week and appointed titular technical director. This makes him a normal employee of Ajax on paper and he does not have the powers that a technical director normally has. Not a good situation, says VEB director Gerben Everts in conversation with Fidelity.

“It’s great that a decent solution has now been found, but there is no reason to let it be titular,” says Everts. “Someone who has such an important role at a club like Ajax must simply be appointed by statute. You cannot say that the board of Ajax is not about technical matters. The board bears a collective responsibility.”

An extraordinary shareholders’ meeting (EGM) is planned at Ajax on May 21. The VEB will then express its dissatisfaction with the situation, Evers said. The Amsterdammers have previously announced that the item about Kroes’ dismissal is no longer on the agenda at the EGM, but according to Evers, that is not possible at all. Removing items from the agenda must be done with the approval of the members.
