Not only Graham Potter, but also Christian Chivu seems to be coming to Ajax soon. The former player of the club is seen by the Amsterdammers as ‘coach of the future’, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Chivu has a past as a player at Ajax. The defender, who made waves mainly at AS Roma and Internazionale, played for the Amsterdam club between 1999 and 2003. In 142 games he scored thirteen goals and seven assists. With Inter he won the Scudetto, the Champions League and the Italian Cup in the top season of 2010, as a teammate of Wesley Sneijder. And he is now also a coach at that club: he trains Inter under-19.

Ajax sees him as a coach of the future and would like to recruit Chivu. In April, an Amsterdam delegation even came to see his youth team; Inter under-19 defeated their peers from Cagliari 3-0. According to Di Marzio, Ajax wants to offer Chivu a five-year contract. During that period he could continue to learn under Potter, after which he would be ready to become head coach at the Amsterdam club after two or three years.

There is a good chance that Ajax will reach an agreement with Potter. The club has agreed with the English trainer on the financial stipulations and is currently negotiating Potter’s role within Ajax. The former coach of Brighton and Chelsea, among others, also wants a say in purchasing policy.
