Demi Vollering is proud of the way she won the overall victory in the Vuelta Femenina on Sunday. The leader of SD Worx-Protime gave her victory in the rankings extra shine by being the first to reach the top solo on the final climb.
“This is very nice. The team did very well all day. The race was a bit nervous. Despite the headwind, the last climb was not too difficult. It was not super steep,” said 27-year-old Vollering.
“At one point I went on the attack and I wanted to make sure I created a gap, so that the rest had to chase with the wind against them. It’s nice that I was able to get ahead.”
Vollering seized power in the Vuelta on Thursday with a stage victory. The South Holland woman also made a strong impression in the subsequent mountain stage on Friday, although she was unable to crown it with a day’s success.
“It’s really nice to finish it this way. We rode a very good Vuelta with some podium places and two stage victories. We can be proud of ourselves.”
It is the second time that Vollering is the best in a Grand Tour. Last year she won the Tour de France Femmes. She will also ride the Tour de France this year.
