Tadej Pogacar achieved a double victory on Sunday in the second stage of the Giro d’Italia. The Slovenian top favorite crowned a beautiful solo with the win and took over the lead in the rankings from the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez.

The 25-year-old Pogacar attacked on the final climb 4.5 kilometers from the finish and crossed the finish solo. Daniel Felipe Martínez won the sprint for second place in 27 seconds, ahead of Geraint Thomas.

On Saturday, Pogacar fell just short of winning in the opening stage. In the sprint for the stage victory he had to settle for third place behind Narváez and Maximilian Schachmann.

Pogacar has a 45 second lead in the general classification over number two Thomas and number three Martínez. The Giro continues on Monday with a relatively flat stage from Novara to Fossano.

Peloton starts without Gesink

On the second day of the Giro, a difficult mountain stage was already on the program. It took the peloton over 161 kilometers from San Francesco al Campo to the sanctuary of Oropa. After two third category climbs, the finish was on a first category climb.

The peloton started without Robert Gesink. The Visma-Lease a Bike veteran left the Giro due to a broken hand, which he suffered in a fall in the opening stage on Saturday.

In the second stage, five riders went on an adventure early on. The Italians Andrea Piccolo, Christian Scaroni, Davide Bais, Martin Marcellusi and Filippo Fiorelli were given space from the peloton and rode long ahead.

Pogacar falls at the foot of the final climb

Even before the first categorized climb, Piccolo jumped away from the leading group. The 23-year-old rider from EF Education-EasyPost quickly opened up a gap and started the final climb with more than a minute’s lead over the thinned out peloton.

At the foot of that climb, Pogacar suffered a puncture and fell, but the Slovenian quickly fought back. His teammates from UAE Team Emirates then joined the lead and in no time the lone escapee Piccolo was caught.

The group of favorites thinned out further and at 4.5 kilometers Pogacar jumped away. The leader of UAE Team Emirates outpaced all other riders and quickly opened up a gap. Pogacar continued to expand his lead and eventually crossed the finish line with a wide lead over the competition.
