Liverpool still has a chance of winning the English national title, partly thanks to Cody Gakpo. The Dutch international scored once in the 4-2 home match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Noni Madueke claimed a leading role in Chelsea’s victory.

The 24-year-old Gakpo made Liverpool 3-0 against Tottenham shortly after half-time. The attacker headed home from a Harvey Elliott cross and scored his seventh competition goal of the season.

Earlier in the match, Gakpo was already good for an assist. After fifteen minutes of play, the Dutchman provided the cross for Mohamed Salah’s opening goal.

Andrew Robertson made it 2-0 just before half time from a rebound and Elliott made it 4-0 after just under an hour with a beautiful long-range shot in the crossbar. Richarlison and Son Heung-min then returned the favor on behalf of Tottenham.

Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk had a starting place at Liverpool and Ryan Gravenberch came on fifteen minutes before the end. Micky van de Ven appeared at the kick-off at Spurs.

Liverpool are third and are five points behind leaders Arsenal with two games to go. Manchester City is second with one point more than ‘The Reds’, but has also played one game less.

Noni Madueke scoorde voor Chelsea.

Madueke played a leading role in an important Chelsea victory

Earlier in the day, Chelsea defeated West Ham United 5-0. After more than half an hour, the home team already had a 3-0 lead. Cole Palmer opened the scoring on a pass from Nicolas Jackson, after which Conor Gallagher doubled the margin with a volley.

Ten minutes before half-time, former PSV player Madueke scored the third goal. The 22-year-old attacker headed the ball in from a corner. Madueke also played a leading role after the break, who provided the assist for the 4-0 score. Jackson tapped the ball in from close range.

After his starring role in the 76th minute, Madueke was taken off to the side to loud applause, after which Chelsea delivered another blow to the visitors via Jackson: 5-0.

With the big win, Chelsea comes within two points of number seven Newcastle United, keeping their hopes for European football alive. The Londoners are climbing the rankings over Manchester United, which has played one match less. Coach Erik ten Hag’s team will visit Crystal Palace on Monday at 9 p.m.

South of London, Aston Villa choked in Brighton & Hove Albion, where Bart Verbruggen was under the bar. After a goalless first half, the home team took the lead through a converted penalty from João Pedro. Aston Villa, number four in England, could not recover from that blow against number eleven Brighton.
