Dutchman Derk van Luijk won 1 million euros on Sunday at a poker tournament in Monte Carlo. For a moment he thought he was already eliminated, until his competitors pointed out that he was still in the race.
This concerns the €5,300 Main Event of the EPT Monte Carlo. That tournament started last Wednesday. On Saturday around 1 p.m., the last seven players were allowed to return for the final.
After one after another dropped out in the final, Van Luijk was left with two opponents. During that round it seemed for a moment that the Dutchman had been eliminated.
He went all-in against the American Rania Nasreddine. The so-called rivercard ensured that Van Luijk won the hand, but he did not realize it. He took his loss, stood up, put on his jacket and wished his opponents good luck.
When his opponents pointed out that he had won the hand, he apologized and sat back down. The Dutchman said he was now extremely tired. The tournament had been going on for hours.
Ultimately, Van Luijk also managed to win the match against the Bulgarian Boris Angelov. That match alone lasted six hours. Van Luijk took home 1 million euros with his win.
