The question remains whether one of this year’s most impressive tennis players will play at Roland Garros. Jannik Sinner has injured his hip and has withdrawn from the masters tournament in Rome that started on Monday.

The hip hinders the 22-year-old Sinner to such an extent that participation in the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, the French Roland Garros, has become uncertain.

The global number two, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year, suffered hip pain during the masters tournament in Madrid last week. The Italian withdrew from his quarter-final match against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Getting fit for Paris

Sinner has until May 26 to get fit, when the Grand Slam tournament starts in Paris. But, Sinner said: “I will only play at Roland Garros if I am one hundred percent. I will not play for a period now and then we will see how things go from next week.”

“We saw on the MRI that something is not 100 percent okay. But we have everything under control. If it is not 100 percent, then I will stop a little longer. Recovery is the most important thing.”

“The preparation for Roland Garros will of course not be optimal. We will do our best to perform as best as possible. But playing that Grand Slam without matches in Rome is not easy.”

Alcaraz also injured

Participation in Roland Garros is uncertain for another world top tennis player. Global number three Carlos Alcaraz is struggling with an injury to his arm. The Spaniard already withdrew from the masters in Rome last week. “I need to rest to recover and be able to play 100 percent pain-free again.”
