Teun Koopmeiners has once again been of decisive value for Atalanta. The midfielder scored the winning goal against Salernitana (1-2) in Serie A on Monday. The victory keeps his team in the race for Champions League football.

Koopmeiners made the winning 1-2 after more than an hour of play with a placed long shot with his left leg. It was already his twelfth competition goal of the season for the former AZ player.

After eighteen minutes of play, Atalanta was still 1-0 behind the already relegated bottom group. Ten minutes after halftime, Gianluca Scamacca, former PSV and PEC Zwolle player, scored the equalizer. A little later it was a hit for Koopmeiners.

With his twelfth competition goal of the season, Koopmeiners follows in the footsteps of Ruud Gullit. The Dutchman is the first player since the football legend in the 1994/1995 season to score twelve times or more in a single Serie A season. However, there are still doubts whether Koopmeiners will be called up for the European Championship next summer.

With the victory, Atalanta takes over the important fifth place from AS Roma. In Italy, the best five clubs qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season. Atalanta and AS Roma are equal on points, but the former has a better goal difference and has played one match less.

Koopmeiners had started on the bench at Atalanta and came in at half-time. His compatriots Hans Hateboer and Marten de Roon completed the ninety minutes. Mitchel Bakker stayed on the bench the entire match.
