Memphis Depay was back on the training field at Atlético Madrid on Wednesday morning. The Dutch international had been sidelined for more than a month with a muscle injury. The return means good news for national coach Ronald Koeman in the run-up to the European Championship.
Memphis has had a season with a lot of injuries. The thirty-year-old attacker missed twelve games with Atlético and four with the Dutch national team in the first half of the season. After his recovery, Memphis seemed to be back on the right track, as he was again in the Dutch selection in the previous international period.
Yet things went wrong again for Memphis in April. The news from Madrid was that he had been lifted from the training field on a stretcher and that it was again a muscle injury.
Due to the new injury, Memphis will miss a number of matches for the Madrid team. Due to the many injuries, the Dutchman is also faced with a possible departure from the capital of Spain.
The striker had already resumed his individual training, but is now training with the group in Madrid again, Spanish media report Dario AS and Cadena SER. It is unclear whether Memphis will kick off in the match against Celta de Vigo next Sunday.
The return of the ninety-time international is not only positive for Atlético coach Diego Simeone, but also for national coach Ronald Koeman. The Capitals will play four more games, in which Memphis can still find the intended match rhythm.
In addition, the Dutch team will play two more friendly matches in the run-up to the European Championship. At the beginning of June, the Orange Lions will play against Canada and Iceland.
On June 16, the Dutch national team will kick off the European Championship in Leipzig against Poland, which completes group D together with France and Austria.
