Visma | Lease a Bike apparently doesn’t escape a day of bad luck this Giro d’Italia. First European champion Christophe Laporte was defeated, followed by a fall in the final by Hungarian champion Attila Valter. And sprint leader Olav Kooij did not even get to sprint, because the early breakaway remained in the lead.

“It was a bad day for the team,” reflects white jersey wearer Cian Uijtdebroeks – still reassuringly fourth in the general classification – in his flash interview. “It was a very tricky day. The difference with the escapees became quite large, there were also some fresh riders at the front, who stayed ahead.”

“It became a missed opportunity for Olav Kooij. There are of course many sprint opportunities in this Giro, but every opportunity that passes is gone. We also had two crashes with Christophe and Attila, so you can’t speak of a good day.”

Better tomorrow than in the dreaded Strade Bianche stage? I’ve never done it, at least not in competition. I did complete the exploration with the team. So we’ll have to see if I like it. We have to go for it and make the best of it.”
