Trainer Mark van Bommel missed his second cup victory as trainer of Royal Antwerp FC on Thursday. The outgoing coach and his team lost the cup final to Union Saint-Gilloise: 1-0.
Koki Machida scored the only goal of the match on behalf of Union in the King Baudouin Stadium just before half time. The club from Brussels thus won its first top prize in 89 years.
At Antwerp, the Dutch Vincent Janssen, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Owen Wijndal and Gyrano Kerk were in the starting line-up. Only the latter did not complete the ninety minutes.
Last week it was announced that the Dutchman wants to terminate his ongoing contract with Antwerp after this season. Due to the loss in the final, Van Bommel was unable to end his time in Antwerp with his fourth main prize.
Last season, the Dutch coach guided the club to both the cup and the national title. At the start of this season, a Super Cup win was added. This season there is less focus on ‘The Great Old’.
Antwerp would have secured European football with a cup win, but is now likely to miss out. The team is last in the championship pool due to six defeats in the last seven competition matches. Only the best four teams will receive a European ticket.
