Jordan Henderson’s future at Ajax is very uncertain, reports say The Athletic and Football International Friday afternoon. Missing out on the Champions League – and possibly also the Europa League – is a major financial blow for the Amsterdam team, which may mean that they will want to say goodbye to some big earners. The collaboration with the Englishman is also described as ‘unfortunate’ for the time being.
Henderson came to Ajax on a free transfer in the winter after a failed adventure in Saudi Arabia. In Amsterdam, the 33-year-old Englishman is one of the absolute top earners. As a result, a longer stay for Henderson in the Johan Cruijff ArenA has suddenly become uncertain, as Ajax will generate less sporting income next season than expected.
The Amsterdam team is currently in fifth place in the Eredivisie, which entitles them to a ticket for the preliminary round of the Europa League at the end of the season. Achieving Champions League football for next year is out of the question.
Henderson is very popular at Ajax and the board will not want to let him go, but the Englishman also has to think about himself at this stage of his career. He wants to develop and perform. The past few months have therefore made him doubt his future, reports say VI. The question is how far Ajax is willing to go to keep Henderson on board, as a departure will provide a lot of financial space.
According to VI it not only has to do with the lack of quality on the field, but also with the mentality of fellow players and the lack of a top sports culture in Amsterdam. Henderson’s performance has also been disappointing so far, resulting in the collaboration being described as ‘unfortunate’ for the time being.
In the meantime, Ajax wants to appoint a new head coach for next season as quickly as possible. That choice will also influence the decision of Henderson, who has made no secret of his desire to see fellow countryman Graham Potter.
However, reported The Telegraph Friday morning that an agreement between Ajax and Potter is far away and that Francesco Farioli now has the best credentials to become head coach in Amsterdam.
