Amazon will remove its Just Walk Out concept from its own stores. Cameras and software had to ensure that the checkout process was automatic. The new system works with RFID tags in products and a scanner for this in the shopping cart.

Amazon Dash Cart

Amazon has been working on Just Walk Out for years and promoted it last year, but it will now remove that technology from stores, The Information reports based on an interview with an Amazon executive. Although according to Amazon, the technology worked with computer vision, object recognition, advanced sensors, deep learningmodels and generative AI, the system is probably too expensive because in the background a thousand employees in India had to assign the right purchases to the right customers based on the images.

Amazon stores in the US are now getting Dash Carts, shopping carts that can scan RFID tags and display purchases on a screen. This should probably make the system cheaper and less error-prone. Just Walk Out has been around for six years.
