Conscious Hotels, which has four hotels in Amsterdam, will open a new hotel in the spring of 2025 in the former Tivoli pop temple at Oudegracht 245 in Utrecht.
The hotel chain will renovate the iconic music venue, which has been empty for ten years, and make it more sustainable according to its own ‘conscious’ concept. Previous plans by the owner of Tivoli, real estate developer Stadswaarde, such as a location of Utrecht City Hostels in the pop palace of yesteryear, came to nothing. The hotel group Conscious must change that.
Conscious Hotel Utrecht will have 46 rooms, a central lobby and an interior composed of recycled and upcycled furniture. Solar panels are also being installed and the hotel is participating in planting a new forest through Hotels for Trees.
All modifications are carefully considered to preserve the historic features of the building, such as the monumental fireplaces in some of the rooms and the stained glass in the lobby. The original windows will also remain in place, but will be fitted with additional windows for their insulation value.
Monastery and pop temple
In the building we now know as Tivoli, a monastery was founded between 1248 and 1267, which later served as an orphanage. After years of vacancy, it was squatted on and off in the 1970s, until the first concert was held in 1981 in what later became one of the most famous music venues in the Netherlands.
Ambition: 2500 rooms
The hotel group sees the trip from Amsterdam to Utrecht as a new step towards its ambition to offer 2,500 hotel rooms in Europe by 2030. There are currently four hotels in the capital under the group: Conscious Hotel Museum Square, Conscious Hotel Vondelpark, Conscious Hotel Amsterdam City (The Tire Station) and Conscious Hotel Westerpark. The Dutch investment fund NIPA Capital took a 75% stake in Conscious Hotels in June 2022.
