iOS 17.5 RC

iOS 17.5 is now the fifth update for iOS 17, the major iPhone update from last September. With each so-called point release, Apple has added new features to the operating system. The biggest update was probably iOS 17.4. This made it possible for users in the EU to install alternative App Stores. But iOS 17.5 also contains some new features, and the fact that there is now a release candidate indicates a quick launch. This is all new in iOS 17.5 RC.

New features in iOS 17.5

As mentioned, iOS 17.5 is not as big an update as 17.4, but some small new features have been added. One is especially important for users in the US.

Distribution of apps via web

Apple has confirmed that the iOS 17.5 beta will support the distribution of apps via websites, outside of the App Stores. Developers are not yet using this new feature to make their apps available, but that will happen soon after the final release.

Anti-stalking

Also notable is the new anti-stalking technology, which was discovered in the code of iOS 17.5. This appears to be specifically designed for accessories like AirTags, as part of the joint efforts with Google to combat unwanted tracking.

Repair State

In addition, Apple has introduced a smart new feature in the Find My app: “Repair State.” This allows users to confirm that their iPhone is ready for repair using their Apple ID and password. This allows technicians to easily verify the owner’s identity and complete the repair without disabling Stolen Device Protection or Find My.

Quartiles game (but not here)

Finally, there are some new subscribers to Apple News+ in the US and Canada: after the update to iOS 17.5, there is a brand new word game, ‘Quartiles’, in the Apple News app. Will we ever get Apple News+ in the Netherlands? Only Apple knows that.

Release of iOS 17.5

The fact that there is now the release candidate of iOS 17.5 gives a clear hint when the final launch will take place. Usually the final version is released a week after the release candidate. That would mean that iOS 17.5 will be released sometime next week. We expect a release on May 14 at 7 p.m.

If you want to try all the new features now, you can download and install an iOS 17.5 beta yourself. To do this, you must register with the Apple Beta Software Program. You can then install directly via your iPhone, under ‘Settings>General>Software update’. We do not recommend doing this on the iPhone that you use every day – a smartphone that is in a cupboard somewhere is fine for this.
