Investigators have recovered the data recorder from the container ship that rammed a bridge in Baltimore, USA on Tuesday. The recorder has been sent to the lab. Investigators should have the information from that later today.

Investigators boarded the ship to collect “all kinds of electronics and documentation,” said Jennifer Homendy, the head of the US transportation safety agency NTSB. Among other things, they took the data recorder, a kind of black box.

The recorder was sent to the laboratory to find out exactly what happened before the collision. Investigators should have the information today. Shortly before the collision, crew members of the ship, the Dali, reported to the authorities that they had lost control of the ship.

A team of 24 researchers will return to the ship on Wednesday. They try to collect perishable evidence and also take pictures of the ship. The NTSB will also talk Wednesday with crew members, emergency responders and people who were on the bridge during the accident.

Search resumed, not without danger for divers

The search for the six missing people continues on Wednesday. The US Coast Guard stopped the search operation on Tuesday evening, because it became too dangerous for divers to continue the search.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore says divers are also facing a “treacherous situation” on Wednesday, including very low temperatures, changing tides, low visibility and debris. Rain is also expected.

The police said on Tuesday evening that they assume that the missing people are no longer alive. Divers therefore look for bodies. According to American media, the missing people come from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Eight construction workers were repairing holes in the road when the Dali crashed into the bridge. Two of them were rescued from the water. One of them was taken to hospital in critical condition.
